Where Are My Installation Files?
Every time I update my computer it is always asking for my installation disc. How do I work around this? Typical scenario, right? Well if you just recently purchased that computer in the last year, you shouldn't have to use your installation disc. Why? Because, Microsoft requires all vendors to place the installation files on the hard drive before they sale the machine.
The way the installation works is rather routine - when a Windows component is add from the Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs applet, Windows looks to the installation path for the necessary files. If the path points to the CD-ROM drive, the program will ask for the disc. If the instllation path is on the hard drive, you won't be asked for anything.
If you want to find out what the installation path is set to you can do so by editing the Registry. To do this select Start - Run, type Regedit, and press
After this point, when you are prompted to insert the Windows CD, click Browse and enter in the "Browse to" field the installation path you just found. In XP, click OK and then enter the installation path in the "Copy files from" text box.
